Spot the scam

Practice only. The messages are invented, and names like “Example Bank” are placeholders for no real organisation. This is general guidance written by Orbiluma with one AI-assisted review, not expert security advice. If you think you have already lost money, contact your bank straight away using the number on your card.

Four questions to ask about any message

  1. Was I expecting it? Unexpected messages deserve more care.
  2. Does it rush me or frighten me? Pressure is a tactic.
  3. Does it ask for money, codes, a password or a PIN? Genuine organisations do not ask for a PIN or full password, and nobody legitimate asks for gift-card codes.
  4. Can I check it another way? Use a website you type yourself or a number you already have, never the link or number in the message.

Try it: genuine or suspicious?
